| Details: | The Martin County Public Guardian is a not for profit corporation that provides guardianship services for those adjudicated incompetent by a court when there are no family members or friends able to perform the guardian duties. The client must have limited funds or they will be referred to a professional guardian that charges fees.
A public guardian is appointed by the Department of Elder Affairs and must follow the Florida law on public guardians. We cannot charge clients any fees for services. A public guardian must have a social worker, attorney, and financial professionals in order to be appointed. Our goal to be apopinted was met on June 23, 2006. We currently have 8 clients. Most were referred by long term care facilities. In one case, the client's friend, who was his attorney-in-fact, was found deceased in her condo when the hospital couldn't reach her for obtaining medical consent. We anticipate our program will grow, as there are many incapacitated elderly persons in Florida and Martin County that have limited funds and no person able to assist them. |
